The Freedom Rock in Cedar Falls

Posted: Updated:

One man is paying tribute to veterans in the form of art and now you can check it out in Black Hawk County.

Ray "Bubba" Sorensen II painted the first Freedom Rock years ago, a way to pay tribute to veterans.

"To see the gratification in their faces as an artist, that's rewarding," he said.

Now, he has a goal to paint one in each and every county in Iowa.

"The illustration is very much the cost of war and what our veterans go through."  He continued, "I want to try to put one in every county in Iowa and here I am in county number 36," he said.

Sorensen wants to make this Freedom Rock special for the people of Cedar Valley and he's doing that by paying tribute to some local heroes, including the 5 Sullivan Brothers.

"I'll be putting Taylor Morris on here, the Sullivan brothers, and then end it right here with Robert Hibbs who was a Medal of Honor recipient. Hibbs was killed in Vietnam so kind of the heavy weight of what we ask these guys to do and what actually the cost is," he said.

But you don't need to be a veteran to appreciate the Freedom Rock and what it stands for.

Betty Getty of Cedar Falls said,  "'It was more than emotional in was an inner emotion and it just was wonderful."

He hopes to be done with this project by Friday morning.

"You just have to step back, breathe and take it in," Sorensen said.

His next goal? A Freedom Rock in every state.
