DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

A Dubuque man accused of murder and sexual assault has pleaded not guilty.

19-year-old Helmon Betwell has been charged with the first-degree murder and first-degree sexual assault of Nancy Krapfl of Dubuque. Both charges carry maximum sentences of life in prison.

He is also charged with two counts of third-degree burglary.

An arraignment hearing at the Iowa District Court of Dubuque County was set for this morning, but a written plea was entered on Betwell's behalf, instead of appearing in court.

According  to our coverage partners TH Media, Betwell demanded and was granted a speedy trial.

A final pre-trial hearing is scheduled for Nov. 23.

If a trial is necessary, it will start Dec. 1.
