Push for new national park site honoring LGBT history

Posted: Updated:

The United States may soon have its first-ever national park that honors the LGBT community.

Two lawmakers in New  York are hoping to make the Stonewall Inn Tavern a national park.

Stonewall is a gay tavern and recreational bar in New York City...

It's the site of a 1969 uprising  that's considered to be one of the most important events in the gay rights movement.

For this reason, a senator and a representative said this should be a national park.

Organizers say there are other U.S. national park sites that honor different historic battles for equality.

For example,  there is the women's rights national historic park in Seneca Falls, New York.

The Stonewall Inn is the first landmark in New York City that has been recognized for it's status in LGBT history.

The two lawmakers say they are first asking President Obama to declare Stonewall a monument.
