(KWWL) -

Recent attacks on women, like the one at George Wyth State Park, where a woman was assaulted while jogging, have left many with out piece of mind.
But a new app, called Companion, may help users get back that piece of mind.

Have you ever had to walk alone and wished you had someone to walk with you?

Now your friends can  join you virtually with the latest safety app, Companion.

App users can type in their end destination and then choose a contact from their phone to be alerted about the trip through texts.
Several UNI students who say the app would be useful when traveling at night.

"I have no reason to be worried, just its dark and there is not a lot of lighting on campus, when there is other people walking too. I do get nervous,"said Melinda Hammen.
"Say you are attacked you don't really have time to text some one," said Macey Wolfe.
The app uses sensors in your phone to detect if there is a change in your pace. It will then ask you if you are OK? If you don't confirm yes, a siren will start to sound."
The app also sends an alert to your contact.
It does takes a few moment to set up a trip on the app, but some say its worth it.
"I think overall safety is more important than any hassle. Especially, if push comes to shove, I'd like someone to know that something is wrong with me," said Andrew Hessenius.

Although it was created by University of Michigan students, the app isn't just for college students, any one with a smart phone can download the app for free.
