WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Car crashes are the leading cause of death in children ages one to 13. According to Traffic Safety Marketing, a number of those deaths could have been prevented with the proper use of car seats.

This week is National Child Passenger Safety Week.

Deb Jones, a certified car seat technician with Unity Point/Allen Hospital says the seat needs to be appropriate size for height and weight. She says it also important to look at the manufacturer brochure.

"The seats are required to crash tested so they've done a research on the seats to make sure that they are going to be safe in a crash," said Jones.

Some of the mistakes parents and caregivers make is incorrect installation, or putting the child safety seat in the wrong direction. It's just important to do your research.

"If you have a seat that needs to go into multiple vehicles then you need to make sure that it's going to fit in multiple vehicles," said Jones.

A number of places this week are offering car seat checks.

In Waterloo you can go to the fire station off of West Donald Street to get your seat checked Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00.
