Autopsy confirms Hammen's cause of death

Posted: Updated:

An autopsy confirms a man killed by a Washington County sheriff's deputy died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

The Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner performed the autopsy for 39-year-old Martin Hammen, who died early Sunday morning outside his home near Wellman.

On Saturday night, deputies say they responded to Hammen's home, in the 1000 block of Highway 22, for complaints he might be suicidal, but authorities could not find him.

When deputies returned early Sunday morning, Hammen's home and surrounding buildings were on fire.

That's when sheriff's deputies say they saw Hammen with a handgun and a propane torch.

Authorities say when Hammen refused to drop his weapon, Sergeant Kirk Bailey shot him in the chest.

Sergeant Bailey has worked in law enforcement for 20 years.

The Division of Criminal Investigation and Washington County Sheriff's Office are investigating the incident and will forward the information to the Iowa attorney general's office.
