Eastern Iowans preparing for Pope Francis' U.S. visit

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Pope Francis is one week away from his visit to the U.S.

People from all over the country -- including here in eastern Iowa,  are traveling to the east coast to  see the Pope in person,  including some students and faculty from Loras College in Dubuque.

Once the announcement was made last spring that Pope Francis would be visiting the U.S...professors at Loras College say they felt it was necessary to have a group represent the college.

They selected six students who they felt were academically strong , but who would also be interested in the pope's visit.  Also going are three faculty members.

They will be flying to Philadelphia next week and  staying at a parish.

"To see the Pope I think will be a big deal for many of them, I think Pope Francis' popularity and some of the new perspectives that he seems to have brought to the new office have really energized a lot of Catholics and I think it'll inspire these young people," said assistant professor or Moral Theology Jacob Kohlhaas.

The event many are looking forward to is the World Meeting of Families, which is a conference attended  by people from all around the world.

Students going on this trip say it's a once in a lifetime opportunity -- since the Pope doesn't come to the U.S. too often, this being the first time Pope Francis has been here.
