CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Before the next legislative session begins, some Iowa lawmakers will explore the idea of building a tobacco-free casino in Cedar Rapids.

Three members of the Iowa House and three members of the Iowa Senate will serve on a legislative interim commission. The commission will study the possibility of issuing a license for a tobacco-free casino in Cedar Rapids.

The committee will meet one day this fall and prepare a recommendation, if any, to be submitted to the 2016 Iowa Legislature.

State Senators Wally Horn, Jeff Danielson and Dan Zumbach have all bee named to the committee.

During the 2015 session, Senator Horn introduced a bill which would have required the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission to issue license to Cedar Rapids for a tobacco-free casino. The bill failed to make it out of the senate.

In April 2014, the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission said no to a Linn County casino, citing studies showing it would be damaging to the other casinos nearby. This came despite overwhelming support for the casino in Linn County. Since the IRGC's decision, many have continued to fight for a Cedar Rapids casino saying it would bring jobs to the city and bring in more money for the state. However, outside Linn County, many people continue to oppose the casino.
