Hawkeyes strike late to take Cy-Hawk victory 31-17

In a back and forth battle, the Iowa Hawkeyes landed 2 big blows late to re-capture the Cy-Hawk trophy in Ames 31-17.

C.J. Beathard hit Riley McCarron in the corner of the endzone with under 3 minutes to play to give the Hawkeyes a 24-17 advantage. Minutes later, Jordan Canzeri plowed in to the endzone with the dagger, on a play that had been set up by a Desmond King interception.

Defensively, Iowa kept the Cyclones off the scoreboard the entire second half. This after Iowa State had gone to halftime with a 17-10 lead behind a pair of Sam Richardson touchdown passes to Quenton Bundrage and Jauan Wesley. Richardson finished the game 19/36 for 247 yards and 2 touchdowns, while also throwing that late interception.

Iowa tied the game early in the second half after Beathard hit tight end Henry Krieger-Coble on a long strike. Krieger-Coble coughed the ball up at the 5 yardline, but Matt Vandeberg was right on the spot, scooping and scoring to knot the game at 17 apiece. Beathard completed 15 of 25 passes for 215 yards and 3 touchdowns. Canzeri led Iowa's rushing game with 124 yards and a touchdown.
