Cadets remember 9/11 in unique tribute

Posted: Updated:

Major Dave Richards walks among his students knowing he will never forget what he was doing on 9/11

"I was actually sitting in an office with a gentleman that was from New York. And then all of a sudden the towers hit. And I remember him vividly saying our country is at war."

And while Major Richards will never forget, many of his cadets in West High School's Junior ROTC program have no memory of that day.

"A lot of these kids were barely born when it happened," Richards says.

So he and a friend came up with a unique way to show the cadets what this day means.

As they stand alone in silence, it allows them to reflect and remember what this day means to them.

"I feel like I'm actually doing something about it. Like it just feels good to remember and recognize those people," Junior Sclyer Torrey says.

"It shows that even kids that were barely born are really to stand up and remember and stand guard and say that you know we're ready if someone wants to try it again," Richards says.

Over 50 cadets will be guarding this flag  today, devoting a part of their day to the tragedy years ago.
