Johnson County passes minimum wage increase

Posted: Updated:

In an unanimous vote Thursday night, the Johnson County Board of Supervisors passed a minimum wage increase.

The wage will increase gradually, going from $7.25 an hour to $8.20 an hour by November.

By 2017, the wage will increase to $10.10 an hour.

Many Johnson County residents gave personal testimony at the board of supervisors meeting, citing family issues, job issues, and not being able to find careers despite having degrees.

Many have questioned the legality of the increase, because it isn't consistent with state laws.

However proponents of the hike have cited Johnson County's 18% poverty rate and high cost of living.

Johnson County is the first area in the state to pass a higher minimum wage than the state.
