City explores selling land where disputed memorial sits

KNOXVILLE, Iowa (AP) -- The city council in a southern Iowa community wants to explore selling a piece of a municipal park where a memorial to a fallen soldier has become the focus of a debate over government and religion.

The memorial in Young's Park in Knoxville has a plywood cutout of a soldier kneeling next to a cross.

The Des Moines Register reports that Knoxville council members asked staffers at Tuesday's meeting to see whether the parcel could be sold to some private group. That could stave off a lawsuit over whether the memorial amounts to government endorsement of Christianity. The Americans United for Separation of Church and State has asked for removal of the cross.

Several audience members at the meeting favored keeping the memorial where it is, untouched.
