Working on Labor Day

Posted: Updated:

Of course, not everyone gets the holiday off to join in the celebrations.

While most Americans celebrated what is typically thought of as the last day of summer, some say working the holiday is worth the time missed with family and friends.

For the retail world, Labor day means huge sales and that means all hands on deck.
"There is no celebrating! No! I enjoy. . .on the holidays sure everybody would like off, but holidays are busy and I like coming to work when we have a lot of people in the story and a lot of customers," said Jeff Mick, manager at Simpson Furniture in Cedar Falls. "Its really not that bad. I enjoy it."

The same goes for the restaurant business.
But according to one waitress, the people she works with helps make up for missing out on time with family.
"I am! I mean, we are really close around here. We all are friends. Being with them is kind of the same socialization that I would have with family, but their not actual family," said two year veteran waitress at Toad's Bar & Grill, Bridget Merritt.
And at the Cedar Falls Main Fire Station, it was just a typical Monday as crews did their weekly equipment check.
First responders know, emergencies don't take a holiday, so, neither do they.
"Children at home and so like I said, being away from them during those times is the hardest part, but I understood that coming in, when I took the job, that there are sacrifices to be made," said Cedar Falls Fire Chief, Josh Lux. "I was willing to make that sacrifice and so was my wife and children."

The firefighters at the Cedar Falls Main Station were still celebrating with a BBQ today.  Not just celebrating labor day, but also two awards they recently received from the city.
