Cyclone defense show improvement

Posted: Updated:

Dale Pierson had the game of his life on Saturday. Pierson led what appears to be a much improved Iowa State defense with 3 sacks and a key interception in the Cyclones' 31-7 win over Northern Iowa.

Iowa State debuted a 3-man front, instead of the 4-man front scheme they'd played in recent years. The result was heavy pressure on the Panthers as the Cyclones recorded 6 sacks, their highest single game total since 2005.

"A lot of us, we talk about how we want to be the best," said Pierson, "This is how we start, from a positive win."

The career performance came in just the third career start for the senior defensive end, the result of hard work according to head coach Paul Rhoads.

"I don't know if there's a player that practices as hard as he does," said Rhoads, "When you practice that hard, good things come, and they come in a big way."

Iowa State's defense will be challenged again on Saturday when they host Iowa. The Hawkeyes didn't surrender a single sack in their 31-14 win over Illinois State.
