Hawkeye line grows up in season opening win

Posted: Updated:

Replacing outgoing offensive tackles and NFL draft picks Brandon Scherff and Andrew Donnal wasn't going to be easy, but sophomores Ike Boettger and Boone Myers passed their first test on Saturday.

Iowa rushed for 210 yards, averaging 4.8 yards per carry in the season opening 31-14 win over Illinois State. The Hawkeyes opened the game by scoring on their first two drives of 81 and 99 yards.

"When we had that second drive we were all pumped up," said Boettger, "and once you do that you have more confidence going in to every play."

The performance impressed Hawkeye head coach Kirk Ferentz, but it also didn't come as much of a surprise.

"They've been practicing well," said Ferentz, "They've really done a good job and as I've said before, it's over a couple years, not just the last couple months."

The Iowa line is likely to face a larger task at Iowa State on Saturday. The Cyclones tallied 6 sacks, their most in a game since 2005, in a 31-7 win over UNI.
