North Liberty Fire Crews respond to structure fire

Posted: Updated:

Fire Crews in North Liberty responded to an early morning structure fire.  It happened around 7:30 a.m.

Fire crews were dispatched to townhouse in 100 block of Alydar Drive for a report of a smoldering charcoal grill that was melting the siding on a home.

The home was occupied at the time of the fire.  The home owner says someone passing by on a bicycle saw what was happening and pounded on the door and rang the doorbell to alert people of the fire.

The three people inside were able to get out safely. Residents at neighboring homes were also evacuated.

The home did have working smoke detectors.  The home owner says the detectors didn't go off because the fire was outside on the back porch.

The fire department's quick response enabled them to contain the fire to the back of the home to prevent further damage to the home.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
