Minority winemakers look to change industry's stereotypes

Posted: Updated:

Oregon's first black winemaker is making a documentary film to give more visibility to the increasing number African-American, Latino, Asian and gay vintners.
For generations, social class, wealth and race limited Americans' access to fine wine.
There are now several dozen black vintners across the country and wine-tasting clubs for African-Americans have proliferated.
But the shift in consumer demographics comes with its own challenges.
That's why Portland's Bertony Faustin hopes to debunk myths and stereotypes about the wine industry, especially the stereotypical image of white, rich people drinking and pursuing wine-related jobs.
He also wants to empower the next generation to be involved in viticulture.
