Researchers: earlier is better when it comes to flu vaccinations

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KWWL) -

Getting a flu shot earlier on could provide the most protection during the depths of influenza season.

This according to researchers at the U.S. Naval Health Research Center in San Diego, California. Their study, which was published in the American Society of Microbiology, followed more than 1,700 people over the course of four traditional flu seasons.

Findings show that those who received a vaccine had moderate and sustained protection for up to six months.

A sharp decline in protection due to dropping antibody levels was found only after the six-month window had elapsed.

Under the researchers' logic, a vaccination in September should protect the recipient through the following March.

An early vaccination also lowered the risk of a doctor's visit as far as 70%.
