DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

St. Elias Prophet Church in Dubuque is reaching out to the community for help one year after its roof was damaged.

"We had to put up emergency shoring, which is all the scaffolding that you see to keep up the roof from collapsing," said Father Dustin Lyon.

It's a sanctuary where people have come to worship for about 60 years, but look inside and its like an construction zone in standstill.

"Last summer we discovered that three of the four trusses that hold up the roof of our building have completely collapsed due to the weight of snow and ice from the previous winter," said Father Dustin.

However, the church started taking bids this summer for the project, then ran into a set another back.

"We discovered that the walls were not reinforced and don't reincurr with code."

The cost of the roof and walls are beyond what the church's insurance covers so now, they're asking for the public's help.

St. Elias has started a Kickstarter campaign and it's goal is to raise $100,000 by the end of October.

Every donation made will be matched by the John C. Kulis Charitable Foundation of Chicago up to $250,000 dollars.

The blueprints have been drawn,  the emergency support has been placed in, so now all the church is waiting for is funding and they can continue the construction project.

Meanwhile, members have been attending church services at Hillcrest Family Services while their own church isn't able to be used.

"Our morale has really been low now, we've been away for over a year," added Father Dustin.
