Food banks across the country, including the Northeast Iowa Food Bank, observe Hunger Action Day today, as well as Hunger Action Month for the month of September.
Food banks in the Feeding America network will hold events all month long for the initiative designed to encourage people to take action, and join the movement to help end hunger.
Gov. Branstad also declared September as Hunger Action Month in Iowa.
"47,000 Northeast Iowans lack access to an adequate supply of food, and the Northeast Iowa Food Bank is eager to rally around Hunger Action Month as we continue to fight to solve this issue," Barb Prather said, the Northeast Iowa Food Bank Executive Director.
People are encouraged to wear orange today, as the color orange represents hunger.
The food bank is also participating in the Spoontember online initiative. Supporters can share a "spoon selfie" or video of themselves creatively using a spoon, and challenge others to join them to generate awareness about hunger in the community.
