IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

J. Bruce Harreld, a business consultant some said had no higher education management experience, was named the next president of the University of Iowa.

Harreld, 64, a former IBM executive, will begin Nov. 2.

The former Harvard Business School faculty member and corporate executive of IBM in the 1990s will replace Sally Mason, who retired Aug. 1 after serving eight years as Iowa president.

Harreld will be the 21st president of the university and make $590,000 per year.

The search for a new president began in February, with a 21-member search committee.

Harreld held a variety of corporate executive positions with IBM, Kraft Foods and Boston Market. He went to work for Harvard in 2008, where he focused on teaching strategy.

He holds a bachelor of engineering degree from Purdue and a master of business degree from Harvard. His wife is attorney Mary Gillilan Harreld, and he has four adult children and six grandchildren, according to a press release from the University of Iowa.

The other finalists included Oberlin College President Marvin Krislov, Ohio State University Provost Joseph Steinmetz and Tulane University Provost Michael Bernstein.

Harreld's candidacy sparked controversy. Members of the faculty complain the former IBM executive has no higher education management experience and picking him would be a major gamble.

Iowa's interim president, Jean Robillard, will continue in that position until Harreld takes office.
