Report: speed cameras and long-term safety

Posted: Updated:

A new report shows speed cameras help improve long-term safety on the roadways.

A study with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is based on cameras in Washington D.C. The study includes streets on which the speed limit is below 35 miles per hour.

The research found speeding was cut down, and fatal crashes were also down 30 percent.

In Cedar Rapids, the fate of the speed cameras has yet to be determined. In March, the Iowa Department of Transportation ruled the cameras on Interstate 380 must come down, stating not all of the cameras are necessary for safety reasons.

The cameras were supposed to be taken down in April, but the City of Cedar Rapids appealed the ruling. Currently, the cameras along I-380 are up and working.
