IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Construction is underway for the new University of Iowa Children's Hospital in Iowa City, but the cost to build it is rising higher than originally thought.

The university is asking the Board of Regents to increase the projected budget by $69 million, bringing the total to $360 million.

The increased cost is due in part to design changes and construction delays; the hospital also says labor costs are part of the problem.

In addition, according to the hospital, safety improvements that have been made are also causing the cost to spike. Bonds, patient revenue and donations are funding the project.

The building is planned to be 14 stories high and is located across from Kinnick Stadium. The opening date for the new hospital is now set for December 2016, after originally expected to open in March of next year.
