Hawks Get Ready for Illinois State

Posted: Updated:

In just a few days, these stands will be full and the CJ Beathard era will officially begin. Beatha4rd

saw time in 9 games last season -- throwing for 5 touchdowns -- while picking up a win in his lone start at Purdue .

Now -- with Jake Rudock gone to Michigan -- there's no more doubt.

"You came in here to be the guy, and right now I'm getting my chance to go out and start the season, Beathard said. "I'm excited for that, to go out and make the best of my opportunity and we want to go out there and get a win."

"I think we forget how inexperienced he is, said Hawkeye Head Coach Kirk Ferentz. " He's started one game since he's he's been here, but he's a 4th year player, and he knows what's going on. He's got good skills."

But so does the signal caller on the other side -- Tre Roberson -- who the Hawks saw in 20-11 when he was at Indiana.

Roberson had a monster year last season at ISU throwing for over 32-hundred yards and 30 touchdowns.

and he's been known to create problems with his feet as well.

"He's a dual threat quarterback, and he has a cannon for an arm, Iowa Cornerback Greg Mabin said. "He can really extend the ball down the field. He has the ability to make people miss in space, so we're going to have a tough time with him, but I think we're going to be up to the challenge."

Illinois State might be an FCS program, but they're one of the best in the country. They proved that by making that title game last year, and this is not going to be an easy test for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
