CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A Cedar Rapids man faces up to 10 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to a federal gun charge.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Iowa says 19-year-old Treshawn Smith pleaded guilty on Monday to being an unlawful user of marijuana in possession of a loaded handgun.

Court documents show Smith admitted to throwing a gun while standing near where Cedar Rapids police officers were conducting a traffic stop on July 10 in the 4000 block of 20th Avenue SW.

After officers found the gun, they say Smith told them another man had just given it to him to look at for possible purchase.

Smith then admitted he was an unlawful user of marijuana. He also provided a urine sample and tested positive for marijuana.

Smith faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

A sentencing date has not been set.
