IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

An eight-year-old Pella girl will be the first 2015 Kid Captain as the Iowa Hawkeyes host Illinois State on Saturday.

Melanie Bell, Makayla's mom, began having pains while she was pregnant. An ultrasound found that Makayla had omphalocele, a birth defect in which the baby’s intestines or other organs are outside the body because of a hole in the abdominal wall.

Melanie was referred to a Des Moines hospital where she learned her child would be born with spina bifida, a dilated right kidney, and clubfoot.

After the Des Moines hospital began consulting with UI Children's Hospital, it was determined the remainder of Melanie's prenatal care would need to happen in Iowa City.

Makayla was born three weeks early and was diagnosed with OEIS syndrome, which impacts only one in 300,000 infants..

In her eight years of life, Makayla has undergone 14 surgeries. The first was when she was just five days old.

Makayla an energetic girl who loves softball, soccer, swimming with her friends and anything to do with flamingos.
