Firefighters rescue Iowa couple after creek floods

DAYTON, Iowa (AP) -- A Dayton couple got a reminder of just how close they live to Skillet Creek when the stream quickly rose due to heavy rainfall, flooding their home and prompting a rescue by an inflatable boat.

The Daily Freeman-Journal reported in a story published Monday that Jim and Shelley Garland say they're thankful to the firefighters who helped them and their three dogs to safety.

The couple is staying with other family until they can return to their three-story log cabin home that they recently moved into. They say they were still in the process of unpacking their belongings when the flooding occurred.

The couple says they lost three vehicles, plus much of their clothing and other items that were still in a lower level of the cabin.
