North Liberty celebrates with block party after highway reopens

Posted: Updated:

For those who don't live near Highway 965, the block party  in North Liberty was a fun day with family.

On the other hand, for those who drive the highway everyday, it was a celebration that construction is  finally over and the highway is open.

The highway was closed nearly all summer, causing months of detours and longer commutes.

"Our world is definitely re-opened, we don't mind driving in and supporting our local businesses," said Catherine Harney who drives the highway often.

Julie Phye owns one of those local businesses, she opened Leash on Life's North Liberty location about the same time the construction started on 965.

"It's frustrating for people to try to find you, you're not an easy stop on the way to or from work or a quick jaunt over, so it's really wonderful that the streets are opening again," Phye said.

The highway reopening has helped her business.

"The cars are flowing and business is flowing and it just seems like there's a renewed energy here in Penn Landing," she added.

Everyone at the block party seemed to be feeding off that energy, after months of inconvenience.

"It was rough we weren't big fans, but that's okay it's over with now," said April Stevens at the block party.

"It was very frustrating when it was closed for so long because we didn't even really want to leave the house because it added so much time to our drive to town," said Harney.

Despite the frustration, everyone I talked to said the reconstructed highway was worth the wait.

"Now that they've got the traffic situation squared away, we've got nothing to complain about, it's all good here, we love North Liberty," said Mike Kabela, a resident of the community.
