New Pioneer Food Co-Op eliminates plastic bags

Posted: Updated:

Starting today, if you go into a New Pioneer Food Co-Op, you will not find any plastic bags.

Replacing the plastic bags are paper bags, which is what you will see in the stores instead.

The new paper bags customers are now receiving at the Co-Op are 100% recyclable and 100% reusable.

"I think it's nice, I think it's great, I wish more people would do it," said Craig Byers, who shops at the New-Pi Co-Op at least twice a week.

The New Pioneer Food Co-Op originated in Iowa City and has been in business for 43 years.

There are three locations now; Iowa City, Coralville and Cedar Rapids.

They value local food, organic food and being environmentally friendly which is where the paper bags come in.

It's not about the money, we're told the new paper bags are actually more expensive than the plastic bags they had before.

"It's not going to save us any money at all, paper bags per bag cost more," said Brad Lynch, the Cedar Rapids store team leader.

He also told me paying up for the paper bags is worth it, because they believe it's the right thing to do.

Between paper and plastic Lynch said the best choice is neither, they actually prefer customers to use reusable bags.

Lynch told me they don't want customers to feel bad if they forget their reusable bags, the store will continue to have paper bags available.

All three New Pioneer Food Co-Op locations will be giving away free reusable bags to customers tomorrow until supplies run out.

Some customers say reusable bags come in handy for more than just your groceries.

"Well I'll be using them for shopping but I like to use them for fishing and going to the gym too," said Byers.
