BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (KWWL) -

The pilot of a small plane has died after crashing shortly after takeoff from a Michigan airport late Thursday evening.

William Pergerson II, 48, took off from W.K. Kellogg Airport in Battle Creek, but then radioed back to ground control to ask if he could land.

The pilot circled the airport several times trying to land the aircraft.

The single-engine plane crashed into a grassy area near a runway and caught fire.

The airport was closed early Friday morning while the Federal Aviation Administration investigated the incident. It has since reopened.
