DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded Dubuque with $3.2 million in federal funds for lead hazard control and the Healthy Homes Program.

It's all in an effort to protect children and families from potentially dangerous lead-based paint and other health and safety hazards.

More than $2.9 million was awarded for lead hazard control, while more than $300,000 was awarded for the Healthy Homes initiative.

The city will use the funds to address lead hazards in 136 housing units, specifically for low and very-low income families.

The Healthy Homes funding will address environmental hazards in the home in an effort to protect children and their families from housing-related health and safety hazards.

The efforts in Dubuque will be a collaboration among the City of Dubuque’s Housing and Community Development, Health Services, Sustainability, Fire, and Police Departments, the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque, Dubuque Visiting Nurse Association, Crescent Community Health Center, Operation: New View Community Action Agency, Iowa Department of Public Health, Black Hills Energy, Alliant Energy, and the Dubuque Community School District.
