IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- A former lawmaker is accused of providing inside information to one company seeking Iowa Medicaid business before helping another develop a winning bid.

Renee Schulte's actions are being cited by two companies who claim the high-stakes bidding process was unfair.

Schulte said Thursday she acted "above board," denying she provided anyone with confidential information or that she had an ethical conflict.

The Department of Human Services selected four companies to manage the $4.2 billion Medicaid program.  Three losing bidders are challenging that decision.

Centene alleges Schulte told its lobbyists in 2014 that a DHS official who later evaluated the proposals felt negatively toward the company. At the time, Schulte was a DHS contract worker.

Aetna claims Schulte's subsequent consulting work for winning vendor WellCare is a conflict. WellCare denies that.
