Audit shows hundreds of thousands of dollars missing from small Iowa town

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- A state audit has found nearly $300,000 in misspent city funds in the small community of Casey after an investigation that was interrupted by a fire that destroyed City Hall and the city's financial records.

The audit, released Thursday, notes Casey's clerk of 30 years told fire investigators she had "taken funds that were not mine to take."

Casey, about 50 miles west of Des Moines, has a population of 400 and just two full-time city employees.

Dorothy Dillinger, who started working as clerk in 1984, left the job when a fire last summer destroyed all the city's records hours before an auditor was to meet with her and the mayor. She was fired a week later.

Nearly half of the city's residents signed a petition calling for city audit.
