CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

UPDATE:

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department says rescuers were dispatched to 3312 Oakland Road NE at 5:47 a.m.

Firefighters were dispatched to a report of smoke in an apartment, with occupants evacuating.  Flames were showing when police arrived.

Rescuers put out a small fire by a door.  The fire ha d spread into the wall space, which firefighters also extinguished.

The Cedar Rapids battalion chief says the fire was caused by "the careless use of disregarded smoking material."

The tenant of the apartment, Kelly Theisen, made it out safely.

Fire crews are battling a fire this morning at an apartment.

Fire officials say it happened at the 3300 block of Oakland Road NE. Crews are still on the scene this morning.

At this point, we are not sure of any injuries or the extent of the damage from the fire.
