Eleven people have been diagnosed with the plague in the United States this year - 3 of whom died, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The bacterial illness, often associated with medieval times, is spread by fleas, mostly on rodents and other wild animals.
Symptoms include a fever, abdominal pain and nausea.
Typically a handful of cases are reported in the U.S. each year and can be treated with antibiotics if caught early.
The CDC says patients with similar symptoms who've been camping or hiking should see a doctor.
This is the highest number of deaths from the disease seen since 2000.
