Railroad safety meeting focusing on Iowa railways

Posted: Updated:
ANKENY (KWWL) -

Federal and state agencies will hold a first-of-its kind meeting Wednesday to discuss railroad transportation safety in Iowa.

The meeting is happening following several train derailments in Iowa, including one in Dubuque County earlier this year. The train was carrying ethanol. It was tough for crews to get to.

Emergency plans for derailments like this one will be talked about at the meeting in Ankeny. Environmental clean-up will also be discussed.

The goal of the event is to make it clear who is responsible for monitoring and regulating rail traffic in Iowa.

People from different aspects of public safety will join together to talk about how they can better prepare for safety challenges connected to the railroad.
