Cedar Falls Police Department equipped to fight fires

Posted: Updated:

The Cedar Falls Police Department, there to protect and serve and now better equipped to fight fires. It's something 35 year veteran Lieutenant Dan Brown is thankful to see.

"We had a house fire that started on College Hill and that particular fire was a grill and it ultimately destroyed the entire house," said Brown.

Lieutenant Brown says they were the first ones on the scene that day and the new unit would have been helpful.

"This tool is really pretty powerful. It can really help out at a fire scene particularly if it's at a critical stage. You could have a deck that's on fire and then it moves up the side of a house that kind of thing," said Jeff Olson, Director of Safety Services.

Two vehicles with the police department and one SUV with the fire department are equipped to extinguish fires. Police officers can roll up to the scene of a fire, open the trunk and pull out the hose.

Instead of just water though, there is a foam component mixed with it. Olson says the mixture is the equivalent of three hundred gallons of water.

Although all the police vehicles were equipped with fire extinguishers, this new unit is a better opportunity to help fight exterior, smaller fires.

"It can be dumpsters, decks, you know car fires, that type of thing."

Olson says it's been in place for about a month, but they haven't used it yet. The whole unit is worth about seven thousand dollars.
