Neighbors angry following gunfire in neighborhood

Neighbors are echoing their aggravation following gunfire in a Waterloo neighborhood.

Police are investigating a shots fired incident in the 600 block of Kern Street in Waterloo.

The original call came in at around 2 p.m. Monday as five to six shots, according to Captain Dave Mohlis.

"We heard like eight shots, then three more come out ringing, they thought it was fire crackers, but it wasn't," said Dorothy Simpson, who heard the shots. "It was gun shots. Next thing you know we see a car flying through the intersection, then neighbors come out wondering where their kids were."

Simpson says she saw a car speed off following the gunfire.

More witnesses say one man remained in the street, where investigators later marked rounds.

"I was sitting in my living room, and seen the car go by, and the kid was standing in the middle of the street and just started shooting," said Brenda Miller.

Miller says she saw the gunman run right through a passageway right in between her and her neighbor's home.

"Once he got passed our house he was on his phone like nothing ever happened. In the broad daylight...come on," said Miller.

That's especially upsetting to neighbors because they say usually their streets are full of children riding their bikes, not officers assessing a crime scene.

"They're small kids. Not middle school age, they're like babies," said Simpson.

This isn't the first gunfire either of these women heard on their block, and they say they're over it.

But Simpson offers a solution, "why pick up guns? If you want to fight someone just use your fists," she said.

Police say a house on Newton Street is damaged from bullets.

According to police, a person took off running in between houses near the area.

The incident is still under investigation.
