IndyCar Series race car driver, Justin Wilson, is dead,

The 37 year old died Monday, just one day after suffering severe head injuries at Pocono Raceway.

In a freak accident, a piece of another driver's car bounced off the track during Sunday's race.

Race leader, Sage Karam, had crashed by himself. Debris from Karam's car was spreading all across the racetrack. It's believed a piece of the nose cone bounced up and hit Justin Wilson in his helmet, knocking him unconscious.

Wilson's car then went out of control and slammed into the inside wall. Wilson was airlifted to a hospital, but died Monday, surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his wife, Julia, and two children.

IndyCar CEO, Mark Miles, issued a statement saying, "This is a monumentally sad day for IndyCar and the motor sports community as a whole. Justin's elite ability to drive a race car was matched by his unwavering kindness, character and humility, which is what made him one of the most respected members of the paddock"

Justin Wilson was a native of Sheffield, England. He won seven major U.S. open-wheel races, including three in the IndyCar Series.

The final IndyCar Series race of the season is scheduled for this Sunday, August 30, at Sonoma.
