IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

University of Iowa Police now say a backpack in the president's office was left by a student who was taken into custody for "erratic behavior," and a lock down of that building was "an act of caution."

University officials say police responded to a call in response to a male student "behaving erratically" in Phillips Hall at around 10:54 a.m. Monday.

Shortly after that, police got a second phone call from a staff member in Jessup Hall about that student in the president's office.

Police took the student into custody, but his backpack was left behind, according to university officials. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

At that point, police called the Johnson County Bomb Squad to determine the contents of the backpack. The bomb squad did not find any dangerous materials.

For added security, they also conducted a "precautionary sweep" of Jessup and Phillips Halls with a K-9 officer.

The all-clear was given at 2:29 p.m. via the Hawk Alert system.

UPDATE 2:30 p.m.:

The lock down has been lifted at the University of Iowa's Jessup Hall after a suspicious backpack was left near the president's office.

It was the first day of classes at the University of Iowa, but for those with classes in Jessup Hall, a suspicious backpack prompted cancellation of most of those Monday.

A male suspect was detained.

UPDATE 12:30 p.m.:

The University of Iowa says a male student has been detained during an investigation into a suspicious backpack left near the president's office.

A backpack was left near the University of Iowa president's office Monday morning in Jessup Hall, according to officials speaking with KWWL's Kristin Rogers, who is at the scene.

Classes at Jessup Hall were canceled as of Monday afternoon. Officials said classes scheduled for other buildings were still on.

Police dogs searched Phillip Hall, which was where the student began before heading to Jessup Hall, where the package was found.

UPDATE 12:00 p.m.:

A university official says someone walked into Jessup Hall acting erratically and left a backpack in the building.

Officials evacuated the building and called authorities.

KWWL's Kristin Rogers reports Jessup Hall could be evacuated for the next hour.

The evacuation means hundreds of students are not in class right now.
