Black Hawks evaluate roster during scrimmage

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The calendar still says August, but it's been an important month for the Waterloo Black Hawks. Waterloo spent Friday and Saturday conducting a split squad scrimmage with Madison, with both teams hosting both days.

Waterloo coach P.K. O''Handley sees the 2 days as a good tool to measure how the newcomers will mesh with the returning skaters, while also pairing down what will eventually be the Black Hawks opening day roster.

The Black Hawks will return netminder Cale Morris, who helped shore up a position that was lacking early on last season. Also returning is Liam Pecararo who left the University of Maine following his freshman season. The forward plans on spending the year on Waterloo's roster while looking for a new college team next year.

As for the young guys, O'Handley says there's a lot at stake this weekend, and the nerves have shown for some.

"There's some anxiety with some players, and they're amped up," said O'Handley, "It makes for some mistakes. It makes for some entertainment, but we're doing a lot to evaluate and put together the best club that we can."

Waterloo's regular season opens on September 25.
