DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Back to school shopping can  be a costly item on the family budget around this time of year. Young  students are sent home with long lists of supplies to buy for the new school year...but it's even more costly for college students.

"It's already getting expensive, but I think we should be set," said college student Jeremy Melendez.

18 year old Jeremy from Texas and is excited to start his first year at the University of Dubuque in less than one week. He already has two shopping carts filled up at Target with necessities for the new school year.

"It's a lot of money that goes into it, I'm just trying to figure out everything I need for my dorm so I don't come back later," he said.

Money will be spent on school supplies, clothing...and of course dorm room accessories.

One of the hot items for college students going back to school are futon beds.  Employees say they haven't been able to keep them on the shelves at Target.

As for Jeremy, he still has some more shopping to take care of -- like clothing for Iowa's weather.

"They said do a lot of shopping here cause the winters get pretty cold here and in El Paso, we're not used to that, so they said to get your winter clothing here," he said.

The National Retail Federation says this year, the average college student will spend nearly $900 on back to school shopping.
