How to get rid of pool water

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

As summer comes to a close, what do you do with the chlorinated water from your pool?

Pool water drained into city streets that flows into storm drains can be harmful to the aquatic life in streams and waterways where the drainage water is released.

Sanitary sewers can also pose a problem. If too much water is discharged to quickly it can cause sewer back-ups.

The City of Cedar Rapids recommends letting the chlorine dissipate in the pool water for three days before the water is drained, while still running the filter to circulate the water and speed up the dissipating process.

Once the chlorine residual tests zero it is then safe to drain the water into yards or storm drains.

For further questions on the process, contact the Cedar Rapids Sewer Department at 319-286-5826 or sewer@cedar-rapids.org.
