WATERLOO (KWWL) -

A longtime community leader has passed away.

Ike Leighty died this week. He was 99 years old.

A few months ago, KWWL interviewed him about many things, including his Mother Moon Service Scholarship which goes to area high school students who volunteer their time to make a difference in the community.

Leighty was honored by Governor Branstad earlier this year for his generosity and was inducted into the Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame.

He would've turned 100 in November.

Funeral services are pending.

Here's a statement from the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa:

"Ike Leighty was a businessman, leader, philanthropist, and community visionary. His desire to make the Cedar Valley a great place for all people was second to none, and we are deeply saddened by the loss of our friend and partner in creating a stronger community. The Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa and our staff extend our deepest sympathies to the Leighty family during this difficult time. The generosity Ike displayed over his lifetime is inspirational and serves as an example of true community leadership for generations to come. We are honored to have worked side-by-side with Ike; and his impact on the Cedar Valley will live on through his work with the Foundation. Ike was filled with an extraordinary love for his family and community, and we are eternally grateful to be part of his vision for a stronger, more vibrant Cedar Valley."
