DYERSVILLE (KWWL) -

One eastern Iowa community is helping out their students in more ways than one.

Crayons, folders and backpacks - those were some of the supplies kids received at the kick off to school event in Dyersville.

Some parents say buying school supplies can be hard on a tight family budget, so they are thankful for events like this.

"I got two kids, one that's going to third grade and one that's going to preschool and even my preschooler has a long list of school supplies," said Rachael Bussan.

The event also treated students to free eye examinations.

Dyersville is also participating in  the campaign for grade level reading. It's a  national campaign designed to get students reading at the right level by the end of third grade.

"What we found is that about a thirty percent  of students that are in third grade are not reading at grade level, and that right there prompted us to do something more," said Dyersville community coordinator Jessica Pape.

As part of the campaign, Dyersville has an action plan to improve grade level reading --they're planning more community-wide events for parents and students.

Students don't have much time left before the  school year begins. The first day of class for schools in Dyersville is Thursday August 27th.
