Defense trumps Offense on Kids Day at Kinnick

Posted: Updated:

The season opener just three weeks away--- and the Iowa Hawkeyes..are working hard to get up to speed. Today the Hawks held an open scrimmage at Kinnick.

A nice crowd showing up on kids day before the practice with the Hawkeye players signing autographs for the young fans ...

The team ran through a few drills-- the Hawkeyes practiced with the first team offense running plays against the first string defense.

C.J. Beathard and Hawkeye offense had difficulty moving the ball against the Iowa defense. All-big ten defensive end

Drew Ott looked in midseason form breaking through and touch sacking Beathard.

Today defense was clearly better than the offense.

But the Hawkeyes say this goes back and forth in camp--the goal is to keep improving.

CJ Beathard, "Obviously we have been practicing with us all spring this is our 12th practice so they know our signals better than we do. they came out with more intensity than we did today its how it is during camp--next practice offense will get the defense--goes back and forth--today you can tell they got us..."

Greg Mabin, "I feel like we came along way during the preseason from where we started as a defense even during the spring to now I think today showing our4r hard work paying off but we have a long way to go."

Desmond King, "Just coming out here and trying to get better every day ad come back to the field and see what we did wring and if we got any good plays congratulate our selves and if we made mistakes try to correct those and get back to it the next day."

Hawks host Illinois State on September 5th at Kinnick in the season opener.
