Local man with ties in Cuba reacts to U.S. flag at Cuba embassy

Many watched as the United States flag was raised in the Cuba Embassy for the first time in more than 50 years.

The Cuban flag was also raised in Washington D.C. just last month.

Hearing about the American flag going up in Cuba, hit close to home for a local man who owns The Lost Cuban restaurant in Cedar Rapids.

"It's very special to see the American flag in Cuba and then the Cuban flag in America, that's definitely something that many people have always wanted over this sake of time and it's definitely where we wanna be," says Jess Sreit, the owner.

Streit's extended family lives in Cuba and for his entire lifetime, he hasn't been able to visit them.

He tells us, he can visit them now.

"Until recently you have not been able to go to Cuba for any reason unless it was like a cultural visit or something like that, now you can take a direct flight from Tampa, or Orlando, or Miami to Cuba."

Steit also says the family members he has talked to in Cuba are excited about where things are going between the two countries.

"Well they feel positive, that it's a good thing, it's a step in the right direction," he said.
