HAVANA, Cuba (KWWL) -

A day in history, as the American flag will soon fly in one country for the first time in more than 50 years.

Today, the American flag will be raised at the U.S. Embassy in Havana, Cuba. Nearly a month ago, the United States and Cuba re-opened embassies that had been closed for decades. The Cuban flag began flying in Washington D.C. last month.

The two countries severed ties in 1961, and the re-opening of embassies comes as a pledge from President Obama to normalize relations with Cuba.

The new U.S. embassy will hold an official ceremony today.

Secretary of State John Kerry will be at the ceremony, along with the three marines who lowered the flag in 1961. The ceremony is expected to begin this morning at 8:45 central time.
