SHERRILL (KWWL) -

Camp is coming to an end at Albrecht Acres -- but not before having a little more fun. The summer games and balloon fights were almost in jeopardy for the not-for-profit camp in Sherrill.

A fire struck the campgrounds four weeks before the summer season.

"Before camp started we had a fire in the  basement of Kehl, which is our largest building, our rec building, and uh, it definitely set us back," said the executive director Eric Veltstra.

However, contractors were brought in and they worked overtime to get the camp ready just in time.

Managers at Albrecht Acres say the campers have been having so much fun all summer they haven't even noticed there needs to be more renovations.

The damage was originally estimated to cost between 300,000 and 400,000 dollars, but that number is growing.

The setback of the fire hasn't stopped the mission of Camp Albrecht Acres which is to serve kids with special needs.

"Camp went off, you know, without any problems," said Veltstra.  "Of course, if you look really carefully you can still see the remnants of the fire and the restoration here and there," he continued.

Summer activities end Friday at Camp Albrecht Acres.  After that, restoration efforts will continue.
