IOWA CITY (KWWL) -
Iowa City Police arrest a man after he allegedly admitted to snapping a city tree in half to "impress a girl." Andrew Denney-Bechtel, 20, was booked in the Johnson County Jail early on Wednesday morning; he faces multiple charges including criminal mischief.
Criminal complaints say police approached him as he was laughing next to a broken tree in a public city parking lot. Denney-Bechtel told police he snapped the tree because he was acting tough to impress a girl, according to those complaints.
Complaints also show that he "continually asked for his mother."
Police believe he was drunk at the time, but Denney-Bechtel refused a Breathalyzer. Police say the tree he allegedly damaged was worth between $500 and $1000.
